London & Regional
Portfolio of Mixed use Developments
Martindales have designed proposals for the re-development of 12 former Texaco petrol station sites on behalf of London & Regional Properties.
Old Library, Dorking
Mixed use Refurbishment
Martindales were involved in the refurbishment of the Old Library in Dorking into a mixed use development of ground floor retail, and 16 affordable flats above.
It is understood that this building was originally constructed in 1871 by a private company for use as a place of public assembly but has lay empty since 1998. The conversion works will see two new floors added within the original structure while maintaining the original highly-detailed external brickwork walls. At third floor level the bottom chords of the original timber trusses have been left exposed as a feature of the original structure.
Glassworks Gym, Cambridge
The Glassworks Gym was created from an original bonded warehouse on the banks of the River Cam. The building was built in the 1860s with a narrow frontage to the river and to Thompsonís Lane.
The conversion work provided a fully-functional gym and health club including a multi-gym, dance/activity studio, spa (with pool overlooking the River Cam), treatment rooms, offices, changing rooms and a bar/restaurant which also looks out over the river. The development of the design was generated in close collaboration with Conran Design who were employed by the client as interior designers.
Martindales were appointed as project architects for the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts.
John Peel, the former Radio 1 DJ, lived locally to Stowmarket and was involved in a wide variety of local community projects. Johnís widow, Sheila Ravenscroft is patron of the JPCCA board which has taken a lease on the old Corn Exchange in the town. The board are now seeking funding to convert the building into an arts centre offering facilities for all performing and visual arts.
Martindales worked with Matt Loosley, an architectural student and winner of a competition run jointly by the board and the RIBA to develop an overall concept design for the scheme.
